History
The Story Behind Chippies
Come and experience The Bahamas at Chippies
Trail blazer, cultural Icon, Legendary is what resonates when you hear the name John 'Chippie" Chipman. Born Oct 5, 1928 to Ethlyn Taylor and Howard Nelson Chipman; this dynamic Bahamian with got skin drum in hand and passion in heart laid the cultural foundation for entertainment governed by Bahamian pride.
With a career spanning over eight (8) decades has had a mammoth affect in the world of junkanoo and entertainment here in the islands , ushering a new generation or children, grandchildren and great grandchildren continuing the legacy. Also a taxi driver, Mr. Chipman had a love of sharing his country with our visitors. Mr. Chipman often times took guests to his house unannounced for his wife to cook for them.
Chippie was blessed with a wonderful life partner, friend and gifted co-artist his wife Rebecca Oliver Chipman("Queen Becky"). The cultural couple formed a beloved performance team. She was referred to as "godmother of culture". She broke barriers as she was one of the first female fire dancers in a male dominated act of entertainers, at that time of great prejudice against female entertainers in the island. Queen Becky one of the Bahamas' leading cultural pioneers.
